Have you noticed, there are a few more people about in Tenerife at the moment and many of them are in a serious party mood. That can mean just one thing, it’s Carnaval time, and Santa Cruz is leading the way with the main event, second only to Rio in size and splendour.

Last night saw the election of the Carnaval Queen and it was a victory for the south with Aronas 22 year old Nauzet Celeste Cruz Melo winning the vote from a panel of judges that included Sophia Loren and Gerald Depardieu. The creation worn by Nauzet is called “Age of Gold” and it helped her to defeat the 16 other candidates hoping for glory in front of a 9,000 crowd.

Santa Cruz carries on in a mix of music and dance until Sunday February 10, but by then the other regional Carnaval celñebrations will have kicked into action. Carnaval is just one of many fiestas that help to give Tenerife it’s special qualities that make life here so special, no wonder there is a constant stream of people looking to settle here.
